हिन्दी अनुवाद―एक समय इंग्लैण्ड में जॉन नामक एक राजा रहता
था। वह एक बुरा, कर्कश, कठोर और अपनी प्रजा के लिए निर्दयी राजा
था। वह अपने घमण्ड में चूर रहता था। उसे अपनी प्रजा की कोई चिन्ता
नहीं थी।
     कन्टरबरी नाम के एक शहर में एक अमीर पादरी रहता था। वह 'द
एबे' नामक एक शानदार हवेली में रहता था। रोजाना उसके बड़े घर में
दावत पर एक सौ कुलीन लोग उस महन्त (पादरी) के साथ भोजन करने
बैठते थे जबकि पचास ऊंचे ओहदों के वीर सैनिक जो कीमती कपड़े पहने
रहते थे, गले में सोने की चेन रहती थी, टेबल पर उस महत के आने का
इंतजार करते थे।
राजा जॉन ने जब उस महंत के बारे में सुना जो उससे भी बढ़िया जिन्दगी
जी रहा है, तो उसने इस पर रोक लगाने की सोची। इसलिए उसने उस बूढे
आदमी यानी महत को अपने पास आने का संदेश भेजा।

    दृश्य : I (राजा जॉन का दरबार)
राजा जॉन : तो फादर एबॉट (महंत)। मैंने सुना है कि तुम्हारे पास
मुझसे भी सुंदर महल है। ऐसा करने की तुम्हारी हिम्मत कैसे हुई ? तुम्हें पता
नहीं कि यहाँ पर राजा से बेहतर घर में कोई नहीं रह सकता?
   पादरी: ओ राजन ! मैं विनम्रता के साथ कहना चाहता हूँ कि मैं तो सिर्फ
अपनी ही चीज खर्च करता हूँ। मुझे गलत न समझें और मुझे अपने दोस्तों
और बहादुर योद्धाओं. जो मेरे साथ हैं. इनके साथ चैन से रहने दें।
     राजा जॉनः तुम्हें समझने में मुझे कोई गलती नहीं हुई है। इस राज्य में
जो भी है. मेरा है। तुमने साहस कैसे किया मुझसे भी शानदार जीवन जीने
का कोई भी सोचेगा। तुम मेरे बदले खुद राजा बनना चाहते हो।
     पादरीः ओह कृपा कर ऐसा न कहें। क्योंकि मैं–
राजा जॉनः एक भी शब्द और नहीं (चीखकर राजा बोला) ! तुम्हारा
दोष स्पष्ट है और यदि तुम मेरे तीन प्रश्नों का उत्तर नहीं देते हो. तो तुम्हारा
सिर काट लिया जायगा और तुम्हारी सारी संपत्ति मेरी हो जायगी।
     पादरी: मैं आपके प्रश्नों का उत्तर देने की कोशिश करूँगा, राजन !
     राजा जॉनः अच्छा, तो मैं जो यहाँ सोने का मुकुट पहन कर बैठा हुआ
हूँ, तुम्हें मुझे एक दिन के अंदर बताना होगा कि-मैं कब तक जिऊँगा, दूसरा
सवाल, मैं कब, कितनी जल्दी पूरी दुनिया का चक्कर लगा पाऊँगा, और
आखिरी सवाल, तुम्हें बताना होगा कि मैं क्या सोच रहा हूँ।
        पादरी : ओ राजन ! आपके सवाल (प्रश्न) बड़े गहरे हैं, कठिन प्रश्न
हैं और मैं इनका उत्तर तुरंत नहीं दे सकता । पर, यदि आप मुझे इन पर सोचने
के लिए दो सप्ताह का समय देते हैं. तो मैं अपनी पूरी शक्ति से इन प्रश्नों
का उत्तर देने की कोशिश करूँगा।
  राजा जॉनः दो सप्ताह का समय है तुम्हारे पास, लेकिन अगर तुम
असफल हुए तो तुम अपना सिर भी खोओगे और सारी संपत्ति भी।
        पादरी उदास और गहरे भय के साथ दरबार से निकला । वह इंगलैण्ड
के ऑक्सफोर्ड व कैम्ब्रिज विश्वविद्यालयों में गया, विद्वानों से वे प्रश्न पूछे-पर
उसे वहाँ भी उन प्रश्नों का जवाब न मिला।
         अन्त में निराश होकर, दुःखी मन से वह पादरी अपने घोड़े पर सवार
वापस लौटा, अपने दोस्त और वीर योद्धाओं को अलविदा कहने, चूँकि अब
उसके पास एक सप्ताह से भी कम समय बचा था।'

"SCENE-II (In the country side) ................outdoor

दृश्य : II (आक्सफोर्ड और कैम्ब्रिज विश्वविद्यालयों से पादरी द्वारा
लंदन लोटते हुए) रास्ते में वापस लौटते हुए पादरी को एक गड़ेरिया मिला
जो अपने खेत में जा रहा था।
       गड़ेरियाः स्वागत है मालिक । राजा जॉन के पास से आप हमारे लिए
क्या समाचार लाये हैं?
    पादरी : बुरी खबर!
(पादरी ने गड़ेरियों को सारा किस्सा सुनाया ।)
गड़ेरिया : खुश हो जाएँ अबु अच्छे मालिक! क्या आपने नहीं सुना कभी
कि एक मूर्ख भी एक विद्वान को चालाकी सिखा सकता है ? मैं आपको
इस संकट से निकाल सकता हूँ।
पादरी : तुम मेरी मदद, कैसे कर सकते हो ?
गड़ेरिया : अच्छा. आपको तो पता है. सभी कहते हैं. मैं आपके जैसा
दिखता हूँ। सो, आप अपने नौकर-चाकर, घोड़ा, अपना कपड़ा, लबादा 
मुझे दे दीजिए । मैं लंदन जाऊंगा और राजा से मिलूँगा। अगर कुछ न कर
सका तो कम से कम में आपके लिए अपनी जान तो दे ही सकता हूँ।
पादरी : अच्छे आदमी, तुम बहुत दयालु हो । तुम अपनी योजनानुसार 
काम करो। अगर बहुत बुरा होगा भी तो तुम नहीं अपनी जगह पर मैं ही
मरूँगा।
      इस प्रकार, गड़ेरिया ने उस पादरी का भेष बनाया. पादरी का लबादा
पहना, उसको टोपी ली. सुनहरी छड़ी ली. सहारा लेकर चलने के स्वाग ले
लिए, फिर पादरी के घोड़े पर बैठ. कई नौकर-चाकरों के साथ लंदन के
लिए रवाना हो गया ।

                          दृश्य III (राजा जॉन का दरबार)

राजा जॉन : स्वागत है पादरी महोदय ! अच्छी बात है तुम वापस आ
गये। लेकिन मेरे तीनों प्रश्नों का उत्तर नहीं दिया तो तुम्हारा सिर काट लिया
जाएगा।
गड़ेरिया :मैं उन प्रश्नों का उत्तर देने के लिए तैयार हूँ राजन !
राजा जॉन :वाकई, सचमुच । (और वह मुस्कुराता है) तो. मेरे पहले
प्रश्न का उत्तर दो। मैं कब तक जिऊंगा? तुम्हें मुझे आज ही बताना होगा।
गड़ेरिया : आप उसी दिन तक जीओगे जिस दिन आपको मरना है
और एक दिन भी अधिक नहीं। और आप तब मरोगे जब आप अपनी
आखिरी साँस लोगे, एक भी क्षण पहले नहीं।
             (राजा हँसता है)
राजा जॉन : तुम चालाक हो । चले जाने से, माना तुम्हारा यह उत्तर सही
है। अब तुम मुझे बताओं कि मैं दुनिया के चारों ओर चक्कर लगा पाऊँगा?
गड़ेरिया : आपको सूरज के साथ उठना होगा. सूरज के साथ अपने घोड़े
पर सूरज की चाल के साथ-साथ सवारी करना होगा, जब तक कि वह
अगली सुबह न उगे। जैसे ही आप इसे करेंगे आप पायेंगे कि चौबीस घण्टों
में ही आपने दुनिया की सैर कर ली होगी।
           राजा जॉन : (राजा फिर हँसता है) वाकई मैंने सोचा न था कि यह
काम इतना शीघ्र हो सकता है। तुम चालाक ही नहीं विद्वान भी हो। चलो
इस सवाल को भी छोड़ों। तीसरे और अन्तिम प्रश्न का उत्तर―मैं क्या सोचता
हूँ ?
गड़ेरिया : यह तो आसान सवाल है। आप सोचते हैं कि मैं कैन्टरबेरी
का पादरी हूँ। लेकिन सत्य तो यह है कि मैं एक गरीब गड़ेरिया हूँ, और
आपसे अपने लिए और उन पादरी के लिए माफी माँगने आया हूँ।
(और ऐसा कहते हुए गड़ेरिये ने पादरी का लबादा उतार दिया जिसके
नीचे उसके अपने कपड़े थे)।
        (राजा जोरों से, और देर तक हँसता रहा)
राजा जॉन : चालाक आदमी अब तुम कैन्टरबेरी के पादरी बनोगे, उस
पादरी की जगह पर।
गड़ेरिया : ओ राजन ! यह संभव नहीं है। न तो मैं पढ़ सकता हूँ, न
लिख सकता हूँ।
राजा जॉन : बहुत अच्छे, तब मैं तुम्हारे इस शानदार मजाक के लिए
तुम्हें आज से रोज चाँदी की चार अशर्फी दिया करूंगा, जब तक तुम जिन्दा
रहोंगे और जब तुम घर पहुँचोगे तो उस पादरी से कहना कि मैंने उसे तुम्हारे
कारण माफ कर दिया है।

                             WORD MEANING

Abbot (एबॉट) = पादरी महाधीश. किसी धार्मिक स्थान या समूह का
महन्त, प्रमुख गुरु । Knights (नाइट्स)= शूरवीर, योद्धा, (अतीत के वे
सैनिक जिन्हें ऊँची पदवी दी जाती थी)। Waited upon (वेटेड अपॉन)-
सेवा को तत्पर तैयार | Riches (रिचेज)= धन-सम्पदा, दौलत, खजाना।
Shepherd (शेपहर्ड)= गड़ेरिया । Wit (विट)= चतुराई । Staff (स्टैफ)
छड़ी (सोंटा), आधार (सहारा) | Pieces of silver (पीसेज ऑफ सिल्वर),
(यहाँ) चाँदी के सिक्के । Harsh (हार्श)= कठोर । Cruel (एल)
निर्दयी। Subject (सब्जेक्ट)= प्रजा । Noble men (नॉबल मेन)=

Ans. No, the Abbot was not able to answer the questions.
He visited the famous universities of England, the Oxford and
Cambridge.

Q.5. Who answered the King's questions? What were
the three answers ?
Ans. The shepherd answered the king's questions. The
first answer was that shall live until the day that he lives
and not one day longer and he shall die when he takes his last
breath, and not one moment before. The second answer was
that he must rise with the sun and he must ride with the sun
until it rises again the next morning. As soon as he does that
he will find that he has ridden round the world in 24 hours.
The third answer was he tells that it is an easy question.
You think that I am the Abbot of Canterbury but to tell you
the truth, I am only his poor shepherd, and I have come to beg
your pardon for him and for me.
