वह कुत्ता का बच्चा सिर्फ दो महीने का था, उसका जबड़ा चौकोर था,
आँखें लाल, चपटी नाक और बड़ा सा सिर था। उसे खरीदने की वजह
आसपास के घरों में बढ़ती चोरियाँ थी और हमारे मकान मालिक को पुलिस
से ज्यादा कुत्तों पर भरोसा था। वे बहुत घूमे और अंत में एक कुत्ता बेचने
वाले से मिले। उसने एक महीने का कुत्ता उठाया और बोला छह महीने में
यह कुछ ऐसा करेगा कि लोग इसका सम्मान करेंगे और डरेंगे। उन्होंने उसकी
बातों से संतुष्ट होकर एडवांस (अग्रिम) दिया और एक महीने के बाद 75
रुपया देकर पप्पी को घर ले आए। पप्पी उतना अच्छा नहीं दिखता था; न
ही उतना अच्छा खेलने लायक था लेकिन फिर भी उसके मालिक उसे घेरकर
बैठते और उसे प्यार से देखते थे। अब बारी थी उसके नामकरण की जिसको
लेकर काफी बहस हुई। सबसे छोटे बच्चे ने कहा 'क्यों न हम इसे टाइगर
बुलाएँ। 'राह पर चलने वाले हर कुत्ते का नाम टाइगर ही होता है' किसी ने
ऐसा कहा। 'क्यों न सीजर' ? 'सीजर ! अगर ढूँढने गए तो दक्षिण भारत में
अकेले 15 हजार इस नाम के कुत्ते मिल जायेंगे। इसी प्रकार किसी ने अटिला
नाम सुझाया। और यह नाम सबको बहुत पसंद आया। अटिला ने इंसानों के
प्रति प्रेम दिखाना शुरू कर दिया था जो कि कभी-कभी चिंता की बात थी।

कई प्रकार के लोग दरवाजे पर रोजाना आते थे। अटिला सबका स्वागत
गर्मजोशी से करता था। जैसे ही दरवाजा खुलता था वो चौकन्ना हो जाता था
और आगे की ओर झपटता था। जैसे ही आदमी उसे देखकर मुस्कुराता था
तो अटिला पिघल जाता था। वह ऐसा बर्ताव करता जैसे कि वह अपनी हरकत
के लिए शर्मिंदा हैं। मानो वो बोल रहा हो कि वो तो सिर्फ उसे लेने आया
है। जब तक कि उसके सर पर कोई थपथपा ना दे वह उसकी गोद में बैठा
रहता। उसे जब तक ऐसा ना लगे कि उस आदमी ने उसे माफ कर दिया हो,
वैसे ही रहता।

जैसे ही दरवाजे के खुलने की आवाज आती थी वह उत्तेजित हो जाता
था। इसलिए किसी ने कहा कि इसका नाम ब्लाइंड वौर्म क्यों नहीं रख देते ?
वह बहुत खाता था। इसकी माँ कहती थी कि इतने खाने के पैसे में तो दो
वॉचमैन आ जाएजा सबसे छोटा सदस्य जो कुत्ते को हमेशा बचाता था वह
बोला कि अटिला के पास फूल चोर पकड़ने के अलावा बहुत काम है। अटिला
पूरी रात चुपचाप चलता रहता था। किसी ने कहा, घर के चारों तरफ इसे तुम
रात में कमरे में बंद करके रखो। नहीं तो चोर अकेले चोरी नहीं कर पाए मगर
अटिला का साथ पाकर चोरी कर जाए। ये गलत नहीं होगा कि कम से कम
ये भौंके।

रंगा शहर से तीन मील दूर रहता था। वह एक 'गैंग-कूली' था जो रोड
बनाने का काम करता था। कभी-कभी रात में वह चोरी करने के लिए
निकलता था। उससे उसे खूब फायदा होता था। एक रात एक बजे रंगा एक
घर में खिड़की के जरिए घुसा। उस घर में जितना भी कीमती सामान, गहने
और जो-जो वह खोज सकता था उसने एक पोटली में बांध लिया।
वह जैसे ही घर से बाहर निकल रहा था उसकी नजर अटिला पर पड़ी।
अटिला भी उसे ही देख रहा था। रंगा को लगा उसका खेल खत्म। उसने सोचा
वह उसपर भौंकेगा। लेकिन वह तो अटिला था। वह खड़ा हुआ और उसकी
ओर प्यार से देखा। रंगा फुसफुसाया कि तुम भौंकना मत और मुझे जाने दो।
कुत्ते ने समझदारी से पैर नीचे किया। रंगा ने उसे एक बिल्ली की तरफ
उंगली दिखायी और उसका ध्यान भटका दिया। अटिला बिल्ली के साथ वक्त
बिताने के लिए उस ओर गया।
जैसे ही अटिला उस ओर गया, रंगा जल्दी से गेट से भागा, लेकिन तुरंत
ही अटिला ने उसे देख लिया और उसके पास भाग आया। चोर ने दरवाजा
खोला और वहाँ से बाहर गया। अटिला उसका पीछा कर रहा था। अटिला
की सबसे बड़ी चाहत जीवन में थी कि वह रोड पर आराम से घूम सके।
और यह उसके लिए सबसे बड़ा मौका था।

अटिला अपने दोस्त को इतना पसंद करता था कि वह उसके बिना एक
पल भी नहीं रह सकता। अटिला हर वक्त उसके साथ रहता था। रंगा उससे
काफी परेशान हो गया था। वह हर वक्त यही मनाता था कि कुत्ता उसका
पीछा छोड़ दे।
अटिला के घर से गायब होने से घर में काफी दुखद माहौल था। माँ
ने कहा मैंने तो कहा ही था कि उसको घर में बंद कर दो। वरना कोई चोर
उसे उठा कर ले जायेगा। यह कितनी शर्म की बात है, किसी को बताया भी
नहीं जा सकता। अटिला को बचाने वाले ने कहा नहीं आपको कोई गलतफहमी
हुई है। यह एक इत्तफाक है। वह खुद से गया होगा। उसके रहते कोई चोर
यहाँ नहीं आ सकता। उसकी माँ ने कहा कि तो फिर कुत्ते ने अपने साथ एक
इनाम के तौर पर जेवर ले गया होगा। तो हमें पुलिस से कम्पलेन (शिकायत)
वापस ले लेनी चाहिए।
बड़ा वाला बेटा एक दिन बाजार गया तो अटिला को किसी के पीछे
भागते हुए देखा। वह भी रंगा के पीछे भागने लगा। अटिला जिसे हमेशा डर
था कि उसका दोस्त भाग जायेगा वह भी उसके पीछे भागा।

बड़े बेटे ने 'अटिला' चिलाया और उसकी ओर भागा। अटिला जवाब
देना चाहता था लेकिन अपने नए दोस्त को खोना नहीं चाहता था। इसलिए
वह उसकी ओर भागा। अटिला ने उसे आगे बढ़कर घेर लिया। इस कारण
रंगा के हाथों से जेवर गिर गया, जो उसने चुराया था। बड़े बेटे ने पहचाना
कि यह तो उसकी बहन का जेवर था। भीड़ जमा हो गयी और पुलिस वहाँ
पहुँच गई।
अटिला हीरो बन गया था। उस घर की औरत का दिल भी उसके लिए
पिघल गया। उसने भी उसकी तारीफ की और उसे एक चालाक जासूस माना।
यह तो अच्छा था कि अटिला बोल नहीं सकता था नहीं तो वह इतनें
गहरे दुःख से भरा हुआ था कि जिस आधार (जमीन) पर वह खड़ा था वह
उसके पैरों के नीचे धँस गया होता।
