प्रस्तुत कविता महान अंग्रेज कवि विलियम वर्ड्सवर्थ द्वारा लिखित है।
कवि की यह प्रस्तुत कविता 1807 ई. में प्रकाशित हुई थी।
कवि को स्कॉटलैंड के पहाड़ी इलाकों में रहने वाली एक लड़की की
याद आती है जिसे उसने नितान्त अकेले उदासी भरे गीत गाते, फसल को
काटते हुए देखा था।
वह लड़की एक उदास-सा गीत गा रही थी। कवि कहता है कि और
जो कोई भी उस गाती हुई लड़की के पास से गुजरता वह या तो रुककर इस
पहाड़ी बाला को गीत गाते हुए सुनने लगता, उसमें रम जाता, या फिर बिल्कुल
चुपचाप कदमों से धीरे-धीरे वहाँ से आगे गुजर जाता ताकि उस लड़की के
गाने में किसी प्रकार से बाधा उत्पन्न न हो।

कविता के दूसरे पद में कवि कल्पना करता है कि जो गीत वह लड़की
गा रही है, किस बारे में है ? उस गीत का विषय क्या है, कवि सोचता है
कि शायद यह गीत अतीत की किसी दुःखद घटना को लेकर है, या किसी
को खोने को लेकर है या पहले लड़े गये युद्धों को लेकर है। या फिर यह
एक विनम्र या दीन, साधारण सा गीत है जो वर्तमान से जुड़ी किसी दुखद
घटना या किसी प्रिय की मौत को लेकर है।

कविता के अन्त में वक्ता या कवि मान लेता है कि गीत का विषय उतना
महत्वपूर्ण नहीं है। दरअसल, गीत के बोल, उसके गाने की धुन इतनी प्यारी
है कि वह देर तक दिलो-दिमाग में बस जाये और जैसे-जैसे वह पहाड़ के
ऊपर चढ़ता जाता है वह गीत भी उसके कानों में गूंजता जाता है काफी देर
बाद वह गीत को नहीं सुन पाता है। (पर कवि उन यादों को नहीं भुला पाता,
जिसका परिणाम है यह उसकी सुन्दर कविता।)

Behold (बिहोल्ड) = देखना। Solitary (सॉलिटरी) = अकेला।
Highland lass (हाईलैन्ड लैस) = (स्कॉटलैंड) के पहाड़ी इलाकों में रहने
वाली लड़की। Yon (यौन) = उस और। Reaping (रीपिंग) = फसल
काटना। Melancholystrain (मैलानकोली स्ट्रेन) = उदास गीत। Vale profound
(वेल प्रोफाउन्ड) = गहरी घाटी। Plaintive numbers (प्लेनटिव नम्बर्स) =
उदास गीत। Humble lay (हम्बल ले) = साधारण गीत। Sickle (सिकल) =
हँसिया (जिससे फसल को काटा जाता है)। By herself (बाई हरसेल्फ) = अपने
आप से। Gently (जेन्टली) = मृदुता, नम्रता से। Singing (सिगिंग) = गाना गाना।
Binds (बाइन्ड्स) = बांधना। Grain (ग्रेन) = अनाज। Overflowing
(ओवरफ्लोइंग), ऊपर तक बहना। Unhappy (अनहैप्पी) = उदास। Battles
(बैटल्स) = युद्धों Matter (मैटर) = मामला। Natural (नेचुरल) = प्राकृतिक।
Maiden (मैडेन) = अनछुआ, क्वारी।

Q. 4. How do we know that the poet was enchanted by
her song ? (Stanza 3)
Ans. The poet states that there is no ending for the song as
the song was heard by the poet even after the poet reaches his
home and he says that the poem is heard for many days and he
keeps on mumbling the song heard in the fields.
