कोई भी अखिल को अपने आस-पास नहीं देखना चाहता। दादी ने तुरंत
उसे किचन से भगाया, अब उसकी माँ उसे अपनी सफाई के रास्ते से हटने
लिए कह रही है। सब कोई दिवाली की तैयारी में व्यस्त हैं। काश ऐसा कुछ
होता जो मैं कर सकता अखिल ने कहा। मैं तुम्हें बताती हूँ, क्यों न तुम इस
साल रंगोली बनाओ। अखिल का चेहरा चमक उठा। उसने पूछा क्या में करूँ,
लेकिन मैंने यह कभी नहीं किया। कभी नहीं रंगोली बनाई।
"हर चीज पहली बार होती है" उसकी माँ ने उसका उत्साह बढ़ाया।
तुमने मुझे कई बार करते हुए देखा है. मैं पक्का कह सकती हूँ कि तुम यह
कर सकते हो।
मुझे कौन सा डिजाइन बनाना चाहिए. अखिल ने पूछा। जो तुम्हें पसन्द
है, उसकी माँ उससे चिढ़कर बोली। वह अपना काम करना चाहती थी।
अखिल ने वही जगह चुनी जहाँ उसकी माँ हर साल रंगोली बनाती थी।
दरवाजे के सामने। दरवाजे के ऊपर गांधी जी की फोटो टंगी हुई थी। अखिल
को वह फोटो काफी पसंद भी थी। बापू की मुस्कुराहट उसे अपने नाना जी
की याद दिलाती थी। वह अपने रंगों की थाली लेकर बैठ गया और सोचने
लगता कि क्या बनाया जाए। उसने सोचा क्यों ना दीया बनाया जाए क्योंकि
दिवाली के मौके के लिए ये सबसे अनुकूल रंगोली होती। उसने लकीर खींचनी
शुरू कर दी। तभी एक आवाज आई 'क्या मैं आपकी मदद कर सकती हूँ।'
अखिल ऊपर देखा। मुमताज, वह लड़की जो उसके घर के बगल में रहती
थी. उसके बगल में खड़ी थी। वह हिचकिचाया क्योंकि वह उसे अच्छी तरह
से नहीं जानता था। वह और उसकी माँ एक महीने पहले ही इस घर में रहने
आई थीं।

में ही अकेले रहते थे। अखिल कुछ कह पाता. इससे पहले ही
मुमताज बैठी और रंगों में हाथ डालने लगी। मुझे भी यह करना पसंद है,
अखिल ने कहा। तुम अपना डिजाइन वहाँ बनाओ मैं इधर बना रहा हूँ। मुमताज
ने सिर हिलाया। दोनों बच्चे शांति से अपना काम करने लगे। अखिल ने पूछा
कि तुम्हारे पापा कहाँ है? वह बॉम्बे (अब मुम्बई) के दंगे में मारे गए―
मुमताज ने बिना सिर उठाए जवाब दिया।
अखिल को अफसोस था कि आखिर उसने यह क्यों पूछा। वह यह
कहना चाहता था, लेकिन उसने पूछ लिया 'दंगा क्या होता है।'
जब लोग एक दूसरे से नफरत करते हैं तो वह उन्हें मार देते हैं। मुमताज
ने ऊँचे स्वर में कहा।
अखिल ने पूछा― लोग नफरत क्यों करते हैं। क्योंकि वह अलग होते हैं–
मुमताज ने कहा। अखिल ने बहस किया कि 'सब अलग होते हैं। कोई मोटा,
पतला, लंबा, नाटा....हर कोई एक जैसा कैसे हो सकता है?'
'अम्मी ने कहा क्योंकि हम मुस्लिम हैं, 'मुमताज ने कहा। मैं तुमसे नफरत
नहीं करता, मैं तुम्हें पसंद करता हूँ- अखिल ने कहा।
मुमताज ने कुछ कहा नहीं, लेकिन शर्मा कर उसकी तरफ देखकर
मुस्कुराई।
यह देखो। कैसा लग रहा है यह? उसने पूछा, बैंगनी रंग को अपने हाथों
से छिड़कते हुए। यह बहुत सुंदर है। वह अखिल चिल्लाया, डिजाइन की प्रशंसा
करते हुए। मुमताज ने एक गुंबद वाला महल बनाया था। यह अलादीन का
महल है, उसने कहा। इसका मतलब क्या है? अखिल ने उंगली दिखाते हुए
पूछा जो महल के नीचे लिखा था।

समझाया।
वे अपने काम में इतने मशगूल (व्यस्त) थे कि उन्होंने मुमताज की माँ
को घर से बाहर आते हुए नहीं देखा। मुमताज को रंगों से खेलते देख उसकी
माँ ने उसे डांट कर कहा- रंगोली मत खराय करो।
अखिल ने कहा- नहीं आंटी यह तो मेरी मदद कर रही है।
अखिल की माँ ने कहा- इन्हें खेलने दीजिए, मुमताज की माँ की अवाज
सुन कर वह बोली।
"सच में! आपको कोई दिक्कत नहीं है, उसने यह उर्दू में लिखा है",
मुमताज की माँ ने पूछा और उसने दीप बनाया इससे अच्छा क्या हो सकता
है त्योहार एक साथ मनाने का।
"यह हमने खत्म कर लिया". अखिल ने कहा, कैसा लगा आपको
मम्मी? बहुत अच्छा अखिल - उसकी माँ ने कहा। मुमताज और उसकी रंगोली
देख, "मैंने आज तक इतनी सुंदर और रंगीन रंगोली नहीं देखी।" वह मुमताज
की माँ की ओर देखते हुए मुस्कुराई। 'देखो, अखिल बापू को भी अच्छा लगा।'
और वास्तव में गांधी की मुस्कान थोड़ी सी बड़ी लग रही थी क्योंकि
वह दीवार से रंगोली की ओर देख रहे थे।
