एक बार एक कठपुतली निर्माता था जिसके बेटे का नाम आग था। पिता
हमेशा आशा करता था कि उसका बेटा बड़ा होकर उसकी तरह कठपुतली
निर्माता बनेगा। लेकिन आंग को उसके पिता का काम उबाऊ लगता था।
'पिता'. आंग ने कहा, 'मैंने घर छोड़ने और मेरा (अपना) भाग्य तलाशने
का फैसला किया है।
कठपुतली निर्माता ने दुर्भाग्य से अपनी नजर ऊपर करते हुए देखा और
कहा- मैं चाहता था कि तुम मेरे साथ रहो। एक कठपुतली निर्माता का जीवन
सम्मान से भरा होता है। लेकिन तुम्हें जरूर जाना चाहिए, पर मुझे तुम्हें जिन्दगी
की सीख देने दो। उसने अपने बेटे को चार लकड़ी की कठपुतलियाँ दिखाई
जो खुदी, रंगी और पोशाक पहनाई हुई थीं।
हर कठपुतली का अपना गुण और मूल्य होता है-उसने कहा, पहली
कठपुतली देवी-देवताओं का राजा था। कठपुतली निर्माता ने कहा, 'भगवान
का गुण बुद्धिमत्ता है।'
दूसरी कठपुतली एक हरे रंग के चेहरे जैसे राक्षस की थी। राक्षस का
गुण बल है। तीसरी एक रहस्यवादी जादूगर थी। जादूगर का गुण ज्ञान है।
चौथी एक पवित्र साधु थी। साधु का गुण भलाई है। उसने अपने बेटे से कहा,
'यह सारे गुण तुम्हें अपने रास्ते पर आगे बढ़ने में मदद करेंगे। लेकिन याद
रखना, बल और ज्ञान हमेशा बुद्धि और अच्छाई की सेवा करते हैं।
आंग अगले दिन अपनी यात्रा शुरू करता है। उसने एक बांस अपने कंध
पर रखा था जिस पर उसने खाना और कपड़ा बांध रखा हुआ था और चारों
कठपुतली उससे लटक रही थीं।
जब रात हुई, आंग ने अपने आपको घने जंगल में पाया। वह एक बरगद
के पेड़ के नीचे रुक गया।

"यह है सोने के लिए अच्छी जगह". उसने खुद से कहा। लेकिन क्या
यह सुरक्षित होगा।
तब आंग के दिमाग में एक मजेदार विचार आया। उसने सोचा कि यह
बात मैं इनमें से एक कठपुतली से पूछता हूँ।
उसने मुस्कुराते हुए देवी-देवताओं के भगवान कठपुतली से पूछा- 'मुझे
बताओ कि यह स्थान सुरक्षित है?'
अब वह आश्चर्य में पड़ गया जब वह कठपुतली जीवित हो गई। वह
बांस से उतर कर अपने पूरे आकार में बदल गई।
'आंग'. देवी-देवताओं के राजा ने कहा- अपनी आंखें खोलो और अपने
चारों ओर देखो। यही बुद्धिमानी का पहला कदम है। अगर तुम स्वयं यह नहीं
समझ पाओगे कि तुम्हारे लिए क्या अच्छा है, तब तो दूसरे तुम्हें आराम से मूर्ख
बना देंगे, बहका देंगे।
और फिर, अगले ही पल वह कठपुतली वापस बांस पर जा बैठी
अब आंग को होश आया। उसने उस पेड़ के चारों ओर देखा। उस जमीन
पर एक बाघ के पंजों के निशान दिखे। रात में वह पेड़ पर जा सोया और
तब बड़ा खुश हुआ जब गहरी रात में चुपके से वह बाघ उस पेड़ के नीचे
आया।
अगली सुबह आंग पहाड़ पर चढ़ा और सूर्यास्त होने पर एक जगह
ठहर गया। अगली सुबह वह उठा तो देखा कि कुछ लोगों का जत्था/कारवाँ
नीचे सड़के से गुजर रहा था। दर्जन भर बैलगाड़ियार कीमती सामान ढो
रही थीं।
तब उसने सोचा कि यह कारवाँ किसी अमीर व्यापारी का लगता है और
उसने भी धन प्राप्ति की कामना की।
फिर एक विचार उसके मन में आया। उसने हरे रंग की राक्षस जैसी
कठपुतली से पूछा- बताओ कि मैं अमीर कैसे बन सकता हूँ। वे धनी कीमती
सामन कैसे प्राप्त कर सकता हूँ?
आंग आश्चर्य से देखता रहा जब वह कठपुतली भी बड़े आकार में
जीवित हो गयी।

उस दानव कठपुतली ने कहा- यदि तुम्हारे पास शक्ति है तो कुछ भी
पा सकते हो तुम।
यह देखो- कहकर उस कठपुतली ने अपने पैर जमीन पर पटके।
'रुको' चीखा आंग। पर देर हो चुकी थी। उनके ठीक नीचे पहाड़ से
पत्थर ने टूटकर-लुढ़ककर रास्ता जाम कर दिया। गाड़ीवान गाड़ी छोड़कर
भाग गये।
'देखा तुमने' कठपुतली ने कहा- आंग भागकर उन कीमती रत्नों को
समेटते हुए चिल्लाया- अब यह सब मेरा है।
तभी आंग की नजर एक बैलगाड़ी में बैठी एक युवा स्त्री, पर पड़ी जो
डर के मारे रो रही थी।
मेरा नाम माला है- उसने धीमी आवाज में कहा- मेरे पिता इस कारवां
के मालिक हैं। हम उनसे ही मिलने जा रहे थे।
आंग को माला से प्यार हो गया। वह बोला कि वह उसे जीवन भर खुश
रखेगा। माला चिल्लाई- मुझे भी इन रत्नों के साथ ले चलो, पर रहोगे तुम
चोर हो।
आंग को धक्का पहुँचा- क्या वह वाकई एक चोर था ? दानव
कठपुतली बोला- उसकी बात मत सुनो। तुम उसे चाहते थे। वह तुम्हें मिल
गई। बस, रास्ते में वह अपना विचार बदल लेगी। अब हमें चलना चाहिए।
दानव कठपुतली ने रास्ता साफ कर दिया और आंग अब कारवाँ का
स्वामी बन उसे ले चला। उस दोपहर वे पहाड़ों से राजधानी शहर के पास
पहुँच गये।
आग ने उस कठपुतली से पूछा कि अब मैं इस खजाने का क्या करूँ?
उस दानव कठपुतली ने उसे यह बात जादूगर कठपुतली से पूछने को कहा।
जादूगर कठपुतली आग को अपने साथ आसमान में उड़ा ले चला और
कहा-'तुम्हें प्रकृति के रहस्यों को जानना चाहिए।
आसमान से आंग ने सब कुछ साफ देखा कहाँ खेती योग्य भूमि थी,
कहाँ सोने-चांदी के पहाड़ थे।
आंग ने स्वयं से कहा- यह तो अद्भुत है। जरा सोचो कि जब मैं लोगों
को बताऊँगा कि मैं क्या-क्या जानता हूँ।

जादूगर कठपुतली ― बिल्कुल, ज्ञान शक्ति है इसे जितना ज्यादा बांटोगे
उतना ही अच्छा होता है।
राजधानी शहर आकर आंग व्यापारी बन गया। दानव तथा जादूगर
कठपुतली की मदद से उसका धन कई गुना बढ़ गया। आंग ने एक महल
खरीदा और माला को उसमें रखा।
पर आंग दुखी था। माला उससे बात नहीं करती थी। उसने माला को
रत्नजड़ित कीमती वस्त्र दिया पर बेकार, माला ने उसे दूर फेंक दिया।
फिर अपने कठपुतली मित्रों से सलाह कर आंग ने माला के पिता को
ढूँढकर उससे उसकी बेटी को खरीद लेने की बात सोची। उसने सोचा अपना
धन खोकर माला का बाप गरीब बन ही गया होगा।
तभी जादूगर कठपुतली ने आंग को बताया- माला पिछली रात भाग
गयी।
आंग को अपना सारा धन व्यर्थ लगने लगा और वह रोने लगा।
इस पर राक्षस और जादूगर कठपुतली खामोश रहे।
तब आंग ने सोचा- एक कठपुतली-उस साधु कठपुतली से पूछता हूँ
बताओ, क्यों इतना बुरा हुआ मेरे साथ ?
साधु कठपुतली जीवित होकर बोला-'आंग तुमने सोच लिया कि दौलत
खुशियाँ लेकर आती है।

लेकिन खुशियाँ सिर्फ अच्छाई से आती हैं। जरूरी यह नहीं कि तुम्हारे
पास क्या है बल्कि जरूरी यह है कि तुम उसके साथ क्या करते हो।
शक्ति और ज्ञान लाभदायक है लेकिन इनसे हमेशा बुद्धिमानी के कार्य
और भलाई करना चाहिए। देवी-देवताओं के भगवान कठपुतली ने प्रकट होकर
कहा कि तुम अपने पिता की इन बातों को भूल गये।
'आंग- अब कभी नहीं भूलूंगा।
उस दिन से आंग लोगों की भलाई करने लगा। भूखों को खाना, बेघरों
को आश्रय देने लगा जिसके लिए उसने एक बड़ा मन्दिर बनाया था।
एक दिन आंग के पास माला और उसके बूढ़े पिता आए। आंग ने माला
से माफी मांगी और क्षमा मांगते हुए उसके पिता को सारा धन लौटा कर सिर्फ
अपनी कठपुतलियों के साथ अपने गांव की ओर लौट चला।
माला ने अपने पिता को धीरे से कहा- यही आंग है। पर, अव यह बदल
गया है। माला के पिता ने कहा यदि ऐसा है, तो इस प्रतिभा को हाथ से जाने
देना ठीक नहीं। वह शायद मेरे साथ काम करे और हमारे साथ महल में रहे
तो ही अच्छा
अतः आंग अब उस बूढ़े व्यापारी का सहायक (कर्मचारी) बन गया।
कुछ समय बीता तो बूढ़े व्यापारी ने उसे अपना भागीदार (व्यवसाय में पार्टनर)
बना लिया और जब आंग माला का दिल जीत चुका तो फिर उसका दामाद
बन गया।
