पढ़ने से पहले― आपने 'जंगल के राजा' शेर की अनेक कहानियाँ
अवश्य पढ़ी होंगी। पूर्वी अफ्रिका में शेर को सिम्बा कहा जाता है। यह
कहानी सिम्बा के बारे में एक स्वाहिली लोक-कथा है। एक बार सिम्बा
एक घर में प्रवेश करता है और रसोइये की पत्नी को अपने जबड़े में जकड़
लेता है। देखें उसके बाद कैसी अराजक स्थिति उत्पन्न होता है और फिर
क्या होता है।

शहर के बारह पहाड़ी पर 'स्टेन फोर्ड हाऊस' था। अत्यन्त तप्त
समतल पर कंटीले नुकीले पौधों जो पूर्वी अफ्रिका सब जगह पाये जाते
हैं। इसके अलावा कुछ नहीं उगता था। उन कटीले वृक्षों से अच्छादित
समतल मैदान के पार हम डूबते हुए सूर्य को देखने के लिए बैठे थे।

अचानक संध्या के शान्त बेला में किसी आदमी के स्वाहिली भाषा
में चीखने की आवाज फूट पड़ी। यह मेरा लड़का म्दीशो था । कहीं घर
के पिछवाड़े से ब्वाना, ब्वाना चिल्ला रहा था- सिम्बा, ब्वाना, सिम्बा ! हम
में से तीनों अपने पैरों पर उछल गये और अगले क्षण मदीशो घर के एक
कोने को छोड़ कर स्वाहिली में चीखते हुए हमारे पास आये-जल्द आइये
ब्वाना ! जल्द आइये ! जल्द आइये ! एक बड़ा शेर ने रसोइये की पत्नी
को पकड़ लिया है।

रॉबर्ट सेनफोर्ड तेजी से घर में घुसा और पाँच सेकण्ड में एक
शक्तिशाली रॉयफल के साथ उसमें कारतूस भरते हुए बाहर निकाला । वह
अपनी पत्नी को चिल्लाया-उन बच्चों को दरवाजे के अन्दर करो और
बरामदे से बाहर मेरे साथ उसके पीछे दौड़ा।

म्दीशो नाच रहा था और घर के पिछवाड़े की तरफ इशारा कर रहा
था तथा स्वाहिली में चिल्ला रहा था-"शेर रसोइये की पत्नी को ले गया
है और उसका पीछा कर रहा है।"

घर के पिछवाड़े में सफेद छोटे मकानों की श्रृंखला में नौकर रहते
थे। जैसे ही दौड़ते हुए घर के कोने पर आये, हमने देखा कि घर के चार
या पाँच बच्चे उछल रहे थे, इशारा कर रहे और चीख रहे थे-बिसम्बा !
सिम्बा ! सिम्बा ! सभी लड़के साफ सफेद सूती वस्त्र पहने थे जो लम्बी
रात्रि कमीज लगते थे और प्रत्येक बच्चे के सिर पर महीन लाल टारबूश
सिर पर रखे था। टारबूश एक प्रकार का टोप या टोपी बिना किनारे (पट्टी)
का होता है और अन्दर इसके ऊपर काला फुदना होता है। औरतें
झोपड़ियों से निकल आयी थी, और एक अलग झुण्ड में खड़ी थी, चुप
थीं और आश्चर्य से घूर रही थीं।

कहाँ है ? राबर्ट सेनफोर्ड चिल्लाया, लेकिन उसे पूछने की जरूरत
नहीं थी चूँकि हमलोगों ने बहुत तेजी से देख लिया-धूसर रंग के शेर अस्सी
या नब्बे गज की दूरी पर और दुबक कर चलते हुए घर से दूर । उसके
गर्दन के चारों ओर झाड़ीदार महीन बाल थे और जबड़े में रसोइया की
पत्नी को पकड़े हुए। शेर औरत के कमर को जबड़े में लिये था, इसलिए
एक ओर उसका सिर और बाहुएँ लटक रहीं थी तो दूसरी ओर उसके पैर
और मैं देख सकता था कि वह लाल व सफेद धारीदार कपड़े पहन रखे
थी। शेर आश्चर्यजनक रूप से इतना नजदीक चल रहा हमलोगों से,
यथा संभव शान्त भाव से कि रसोइया खुद अपनी सफेद पोशाक और सिर
पर टारबूश रखे दौड़ गया। वह सर्वाधिक साहस के साथ दौड रहा था,
अपने बाहों को लहरा रहा था, तालियाँ पीट रहा था, चीख रहा था, चिल्ला
रहा था-सिम्बा ! सिम्या ! सिम्बा ! मेरी पत्नी को छोड़ दो !......छोड़ दो !
यह रोने और हँसने का मिला जुला दृश्य था । अब रॉबर्ट सेनफोर्ड पूरे वेग
से रसोइये के पीछे दौड़ रहा था जो शेर के पीछे दौड़ रहा था। वह अपनी
राइफल दोनों हाथ से पकड़े था, और रसोइये को चिल्ला रहा था–'पिंगो'!
पिंगो ! रास्ते से हट जाओ, पिंगो ! जमीन पर लेट जाओ ताकि सिम्बा पर
गोली चला सकूँ ! तुम मेरे रास्ते में हो ! तुम मेरे रास्ते में हो पिंगो ।"

लेकिन रसोइया ने उसे अनसुना किया और दौड़ता रहा और शेर ने
सबों को अनसुना किया। वह अपने सिर को ऊंचा किये आगे बढ़ता रहा,
शान से औरत को अपने जबड़े में लिए हुए. एक कुत्ते की तरह नहीं जो
एक अच्छी रेड्डी (तैयारी) के साथ तेजी से चलता है।

शेर उन छोटी पहाड़ियों में से किसी एक की ओर बढ़ रहा था, जो
घने जंगल से ढ़की है और हम सभी जानते थे कि उसके एक बार उसमें
घुसने पर हम उसे कभी नहीं ढूढ पायेंगे । अद्वितीय साहसी रसोइया शेर के
बहुत नजदीक पहुँच गया. दस गज से अधिक दूरी नहीं थी, और रॉबर्ट
सेनफोर्ड रसोइया के पीछे तीस या चालीस गज की दूरी पर । रसोइया
चिल्लाता था, अये ! सिम्बा ! सिम्बा ! सिम्बा ! मेरी पत्नी को छोड़ दो!
मैं तुम्हारे पीछे आ रहा हूँ, सिम्बा ! तब रॉबर्ट सेनफोर्ड रूका और अपनी
राइफल उठाया और निशाना साधा और मैंने सोचा कि उसमें कोई जोखिम
नहीं था। जैसे ही बंदूक चली एक जोरदार आवाज हुई और मैंने देखा-शेर
के ठीक आगे धूल का गुब्बारा । शेर ठहर गया और सिर को मोड़, अपने
जबड़े में अब भी औरत को पकड़े था। उसने सोचा कि कोई सेना उसके
पीछे आ रही है, क्योंकि तुरंत उसने औरत को जमीन पर गिरा दिया और
दौड़कर जंगल में घुस गया। किसी स्थिर वस्तु को इतनी तीव्रता से गति
करते कभी नहीं देखा था। रसोइया पत्नी के पास पहले पहुँचा, तब रॉबर्ट
सेनफोर्ड, तब मैं । जो कुछ मैंने देखा उसपर विश्वास नहीं कर सकता था।
यह निश्चित था कि उन खतरनाक जबड़ों की पकड़ में औरत की कमर
और पेट दो टुकड़ों में हो गये होंगे। लेकिन वह जमीन पर बैठी थी और
अपने पति रसोइया को देखकर मुस्करा रही थी।

दौड़कर पहुँचते हुए रॉबर्ट सेन फोर्ड चिल्लाया, तुम्हें कहाँ चोट लगी
है ? रसोइया की पत्नी ने उसे देखा और मुस्कराने लगी और स्वाहिली में
कहा, "वह बूढ़ा शेर, वह मुझे नहीं डरा सका । मैं उसके मुँह में ऐसे पड़ी
रही जैसे मैं मरी हुई हूँ। उसने मुझे इतने प्रेम से ढोया जैसे मैं उसका बच्चा
होऊँ । लेकिन अब मुझे अपने कपड़े धोने होंगे।"
लेखक के बारे में―रोअल्ड डहल (1916-1990) एक ब्रितानी
लेखक थे जिनकी उल्लेखनीय कृतियों में बच्चों के लिए पुस्तकें शमिल
हैं। उनकी पुस्तकें 'चार्ली एण्ड दी चॉकलेट फैक्ट्री' और 'जेम्स एण्ड दी
जायंट पीच' का आनन्द सारे संसार के बच्चों द्वारा लिया जाता है।

aim and he though surely he is not risking a shot at the moving
lion when its got a woman in its jaw. There was an almighty
crack as the big gun went off and there was a spurt of dust just
ahead of the lion which made it stop.
3. Was the lady (cook's wife) hurt?
Ans. No, cook's wife was not hurt, because the lion had
not strongly gripped her in his jaws. As such she was saved
from the serious injury.

I liked the last part of the story as we find that the cook's
wife is not killed and hurt by the lion and she is safe.
