है ? चारों ओर से घिरे शत्रुओं की भीड़ को नकारने की शक्ति कौन
देता है?

साम्राज्य की विशालता सोना नहीं है, युद्ध की भयावहता में जाओ,
औजार के लोहे का टुकड़ा समुद्र की तलहटी में स्थापित होता है, कठोर
चट्टान पर नहीं।

क्या यह तलवार है ? रक्त रंजित धूल से पूछते जिसके साम्राज्य गुजर
चुके हैं, रक्त ने उनके पत्थरों में जंग लगा दिया है, उनका वैभव नष्ट हो
गया है।

क्या यह गौरव है? अहा, वह चमचमाता ताज राष्ट्र की शोभा था
लेकिन भगवान ने उसकी चमक को फीका कर दिया और राख में उसके
कदमों पर पड़ा है।

सोना नहीं, केवल आदमी एक देश को महान और शक्तिशाली बनाते
हैं; वैसे आदमी जो सत्य और सम्मान के लिए मजबूती से डरे रहते हैं,
और लम्बा कष्ट झेलते हैं।

साहसी आदमी, जब अन्य सोये रहते हैं, वे साहस करते है जब अन्य
डर से भाग जाते हैं.....वे राष्ट्र के स्तम्भ को गहरे नीचे तथा ऊपर आसमान
तक ले जाते हैं।
कवि को जानें―राल्फ वाल्डो इमरसन (1803-1882) अमेरीकी कवि
और दार्शनिक थे। 'नेचर' उनकी पहली रचना थी। उनकी दो प्रसिद्ध
कविताएँ 'दी स्फीक्स' और 'वाटर' हैं।
