वृक्षों को देखते हैं। क्या उनमें से कुछ का नाम बता सकते हो जिनकी पूजा
त्योहारों के समय होती है। क्या तुम सोचते हो कि हमलोग क्यों ऐसा करते
हैं? हमलोग इस कहानी में वृक्ष देवी जो देवदार में रहती है, के बारे में
पढ़ें और जानने का प्रयास करें कि प्रकृति का सम्मान करना हमारे लिए
क्यों जरूरी है।

हिमालय की तराई में एक समय एक राजा रहता था। वह अपना
राजमहल इतना सुन्दर बनाना चाहता था जो उस भाग के अन्य राजाओं
के महल से अधिक सुन्दर हो । उसने अनुमान लगाया कि उसमें काफी
खर्च आयेगा। इसलिए उसने ऐसी योजना बनायी कि खर्च भी कम और
राजमहल भी अनूठा हो । उसने फैसला कि राजमहल ऐसा हो जो केवल
एक ही स्तंभ पर टिका हो, वह स्तम्भ साम्राज्य के सबसे लम्बे वृक्ष से
बनाया जायेगा।
हिमालय में अनेक लम्बे वृक्ष-स्पूए, पाइन, ऑक और देवदार पाये
जाते हैं। सबसे लम्बा और मजबूत देवदार होता है-देवदार यानि देवता का
वृक्ष ।
राजा ने अपने प्रधानमंत्री को बुलाया और कहा- चारों और जंगल
में मेरे आदमियों को भेजो। कहो कि उन्हें जो सबसे बडा देवदार का वृक्ष
मिले, उसे काटकर अबिलम्ब इस शहर में लाये ।"
राजा की बेटी ने विरोध करते हुए कहा कि देवदार का वृक्ष पवित्र
होता है, इसका उपयोग केवल मंदिर निर्माण में होता है।
राजा ने कहा-और कोई कारण ? मेरा राजमहल मंदिर जैसा भव्य
होगा।

प्रधानमंत्री ने तीस आदमियों को भेजा किन्तु वे यह कहते हुए जल्द
लौट गये कि सम्राज्य में कई विशाल देवदार के वृक्ष हैं लेकिन वे खींचकर
कभी नहीं ला सकेंगे क्योंकि जंगल और इस शहर के बीच बहुत बीहड़
स्थल है।
यह सुनकर राजा ने अपने पुत्र को बुलाया और कहा कि घुड़सवारों
को लो और अपने घोड़ों की मदद से उन वृक्षों में से एक वृक्ष को ले
आओ।
राजकुमार अन्य घुड़सवारों के साथ निकला लेकिन कुछ दिनों के बाद
लौट आया. यह कहते हुए कि कोई भी घोड़ा उस वृक्ष को एक इंच भी
खिसका नहीं सका। हमने बैलों को भी आजमाया किन्तु व्यर्थ ।
राजा ने कहा कि तब हाथियों को आजमाओ । मैदानी क्षेत्र से कई
हाथियों को मंगाया गया लेकिन पहाड़ियाँ ज्यादा ही ढालू थीं तथा रास्ते
काफी संकरे कि हाथियों से कोई मदद नहीं मिल सकती थी, उन्हें घाटी
वापस लौट जाना पड़ा।
राजा ने क्रोधित होकर कहा कि ठीक है, मेरे पार्क में वैसा एक वृक्ष
खोजो जैसा कि जंगलों में है। इसे सात दिनों के अन्दर मेरे समक्ष लाओं ।
बहुत खोज के बाद राजा के आदमियों ने एक विशाल देवदार वृक्ष
जो इस शहर से ज्यादा दूर नहीं था, चिह्नित किया। यह वृक्ष आस-पास
के बहुत से गाँवों के लोगों द्वारा पूजित था क्योंकि इसके अन्दर एक देवी
रहती थी और देवी का प्रताप था कि वृक्ष बहुत शक्तिशाली, विशाल और
सुन्दर था।
जब प्रधानमंत्री और उसके आदमियों ने निश्चय किया कि इस विशाल
देवदार वृक्ष को राजमहल के स्तम्भ के रूप में प्रयोग किया जाना है तब
वे वृक्ष के अन्दर स्थित देवी को सम्मान प्रदर्शित करने के लिए पुष्प-माला,
दीया और संगीत के साथ आये और यह चेतावनी भी देने इसलिए कि वह
अपना स्थान छोड़ दे। सात दिनों के अन्दर इसे जमीन पर काट कर गिरा
दिया जायेगा। वृक्ष के चारों ओर दिये जलाकर, वृक्ष की टहनियों पर
पुष्पमाला लटकाकर वे नाचे-गाये।
वृक्ष देवी ने सुना और वह समझ गई कि आगे क्या होने वाला है।
कुछ क्षण के लिए शान्त हवा सी चुप रही, उसके सभी पत्ते अस्फुट स्वर
में बुदबुदाने लगे और शिखर की टहनियाँ झुक गई। आदमी संतुष्ट होकर
चला गया कि वृक्ष देवी ने उनकी सुन ली और समझ गई।

उस रात राजा गहरी नींद में थे, हरी चमकीली पत्तियों में लिपटी एक
शानदार तस्वीर उसके सामने प्रकट हुआ। उसकी आवाज शरदकालीन
पत्तियों की खड़खड़ाहट सी थी। हे महान राजा, मैं देवदार वृक्ष की देवी
हूँ। तुम्हारे आदमियों ने मुझ बताया है कि तुम मुझे काटना चाहते हो ।
मैं तुमसे अपने निश्चय को बदलने की याचना करने आयी हूँ।
स्वप्न में राजा ने जवाब दिया कि नहीं, मैने दृढ-निश्चय कर लिया
है। तुम्हारा केवल एक देवदार पेड़ मेरे राजमहल के भार को संभालने में
सक्षम है, और इसलिए वह मुझे अवश्य चाहिए।
ओह राजा ! जरा सोचिए, सैकड़ों वर्षों से आपके साम्राज्य के सभी
गाँवों के लोगों द्वारा मैं पूजित होती आयी हूँ, मुझसे उनका केवल भला
ही हुआ। मुझमें पक्षियों के घोंसले हैं, मैं घास पर शीतल छाया देती हूँ।
आदमी मेरे तने में टिककर आराम करते हैं। धरती मुझे आशीर्वाद देती है,
मेरी सुरक्षात्मक बाहों के नीचे नये पौधों और झाड़ियों को भेजती है। मैं
अपनी मजबूत जड़ों से पृथ्वी को बाँधती हूँ। बच्चे मेरे पैरों के नीचे खेलते
हैं, औरतें खेतों से लौटकर मेरी शीतलता का आश्रय खोजती हैं।
सभी सच है, भली वृक्ष देवी, राजा ने कहा लेकिन जो भी हो, मैं तुम्हें
छोडूँगा नहीं। मेरा निश्चय दृढ़ है, हिल-डोल नहीं सकता।
वृक्ष देवी अति दुखभरे स्वर में बोली-तब, ओ शक्तिशाली राजा !
मेरी आखिरी विनती मान लो । मुझे तीन हिस्सों में काटा जाए। पहला,
हरे पत्तों के ताज सहित मेरा सिर, उसके बाद मध्य इसकी सैकड़ों मजबूत
वाहों और हाथों के साथ । अन्त में मेरे आधार को काटा जाए जो मेरे सबसे
भारी और गठीले अंगों को संभालता है।
राजा ने कहा कि यह तो विचित्र विनती है। मैंने कभी किसी से मृत्यु
के तीन झटके झेलने की इच्छा करते नहीं सुना ! तुम एक बार में इसे क्यों
नहीं झेलना चाहती और ऐसी विनती कर दिया ?
वृक्ष देवी ने कहा कि कारण साफ है । दर्जनों शिशु देवदार वृक्ष मुझसे
उत्पन्न हुए हैं। मुझे एक बार में गिराओगे तो मेरे भार से दबकर मर
जायेंगे। लेकिन अगर मैं तीन झटके झेलती हूँ, मेरे कुछ बच्चे बच जायेंगे ।
क्या मेरी विनती मान ली गई?
विस्मित राजा ने जैसे ही कहा-बिल्कुल, वृक्ष-देवी विलुप्त हो गई।
अगले सुबह, राजा ने अपने बच्चों, मंत्रियों और वन रक्षकों को बुलाया
और उन्हें बताया कि अब उसने अपना निश्चय बदल लिया है। नये
राजमहल का स्तम्भ पत्थर का बनेगा, लकड़ी का नहीं। उसने कहा-चूंकि
देवदार वृक्ष में मेरी आत्मा से बेहतर आत्मा निवास करती है और उसने
अपने स्वप्न की बात बतायी और सबों ने आश्चर्य किया।
राजा के आदर्श के अनुरूप पत्थरों के घर बनने लगे और विशाल
देवदार जंगलों में वेरोक-टोक फैलने लगे।

she said that dozen of young. deodars spring from her and if
