प्रस्तुत कविता के कवि हैं डेविड रॉय (जन्म-अक्टूबर 10, 1954) एक
अमरीकन हैं जो बहुमुखी प्रतिभा के धनी है। इस कविता में खेलों को विषय
बनाया गया है। विशेष ओलंपिक खेल हैं विषय इस कविता का जिसमें
विकलांग खिलाड़ी ही भाग लेते हैं। कई देशों के खिलाड़ी उस विशेष
ओलंपिक खेल में भाग लेने आये थे। उन्होंने कई सप्ताह, कई महीनों से
प्रशिक्षण (ट्रेनिंग) प्राप्त किया था तब जाकर वे इन खेलों के लिए भाग लेने
आए थे। उनको जीतना था ओलपिक के स्वर्ण, कास्य और रजत पदक।

ओलंपिक के फाइनल यानी समाप्ति के दिन नजदीक आ गए थे और
लोगों में उत्तेजना बढ़ती जा रही थी। सभी अपनी-अपनी पसंद के खिलाड़ियों
का हौसला बढ़ा रहे थे।

जिन खिलाड़ियों को ब्लॉक/बाधा इस्तेमाल में आना था उनके लिए वे
बना दिये गये थे-सौ-यार्ड डैश/ सौ मीटर की दौड़, की जीत उन खिलाड़ियों
को करनी थी: नौ दृढनिश्चयी एथलीट धावक शुरुआत की बनी पंक्ति के
ठीक पीछे खड़े थे जो बंदूक की आवाज पर ध्यान लगाए हुए थे।

जैसे ही बंदूक से फायर होने की आवाज आयी, खिलाड़ी दौड़ पड़े।
लेकिन जो उनमें सबसे छोटा था लड़खड़ा कर किसी प्रकार से डामर
(असफाल्ट) में गिर गया।

वह खिलाड़ी जो गिर पड़ा था निराशा और स्वयं पर क्रोध में जोरों से
चीखने लगा। उसकी सारी मेहनत और सारे प्रयासों पर पानी फिर गया था।
लकिन सबसे आश्चर्य की बात तो वह थी, जो आगे होने वाली थी।

शेष/बाकी आठ खिलाड़ी पहले तो आगे दौड़ते गये फिर जैसे ही उन्होंने
नौंवे खिलाड़ी की दर्द भरी चीख सुनी उन्होंने दौड़ रोक दी। वे गिर पड़े, नौवें
खिलाड़ी की मदद करने, उसके पास आ गये।
उनमें से सभी खिलाड़ी पदक जीतने के लिए सुनहरे सपने संजोए थे।
वे सभी अपने-अपने सपने भूल गये और दौड़ पड़े इस घायल खिलाड़ी की
तरफ। यह सोच कि कल मेरे साथ भी तो यह हो सकता है सभी खिलाड़ी
उस गिरे हुए खिलाड़ी को उसके पैरों पर उठाए।
फिर वे नौ खिलाड़ी साथ-साथ आगे बढ़े। इससे उपस्थित जनता में
भाईचारा की श्रेष्ठता का संदेश गया। अंत में सभी 9 खिलाड़ियों को विजेता
घोषित किया गया और सभी को स्वर्ण पदक दिया गया - मानवता के नाम,
भाई चारा के नाम।

किया। Poised (पोज्ड) = तैयार। Stumbled (स्टम्बल्ड्) = भागने के समय

(अस्फाल्ट) = डामर, अलकतरा और बालू मिला हुआ मसाला। Medals
