Jharkhand Board Class 10 English Notes | The Book that Saved the Earth  Solutions Chapter 10

                      10. The Book that Saved the Earth
LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS
Q.1. Why are books referred to as a man's best companion?
Which is your favourite book and why? Write a paragraph about
that book.
Ans. Books are referred to as a man's best companion because
they are permanent. Human friends can deceive, cheat or kill. But
books can't do so. They will conținue to give advice after advice as
the time passes.
My favourite book is The Ramayana. It is a treasure house of
human values and virtues. All good human qualities are shown in it
through various characters. They are not characters but symbols
of what parent, brothers, sisters-in-law, kings, queens, servants
etc, should be like. The real human aspect of human life is given in
it. Then the fight between good and evil is also there. The book is
actually all about how one should live life. Lord Rama is the symbol
of a king while Sita is of a queen. Lakshman is the symbol of a
brother. Ravana is the symbol of evil. How is there a fight between
good and evil always is shown in the book? Essentially, the book
like all other great epics guides us about the ways of life and how it
should be lived.

Q.2. In what ways does "Think-Tank" misinterpret innocent
nursery rhymes as threats to the Martinas? Can you think of any
incidents where you misinterpreted a world or an action? How did
you resolve the misunderstandng?                                 (Imp.)
Ans. Think-Tank misinterprets innocent nursery rhymes as
threats to the Martians. He hears the nursery tryme of 'Mistress
Mary...row'. He hears the words 'garden' and 'cockle shells' and
"silver bells' in it. He at once means that the earthlings have
discovered how to combine agriculture and mining. They can also
grow high explosives. Secondly, he hears 'Humpty Dumpty..and
sees his picture. It is similar to his. From this he concludes that the
earthlings are after his life and mars.
It so happened that a father-in-law told his daughter-in-law
that if she didn't behave like a responsible woman, both would
have to undergo legal battles. That would not be in the interest of
both the familes. But the dauther-in-law being less educated
concluded that a divorce case was filed in against her. Later when
they got face to face, the daughter-in-law realised her folishness in
'misinterpreting'. This brought things to normal.

Q.3. What guesses to Think-Tank and Noodle make about the
books found on earth?
Ans. Think -Tank gets in contact with Martian space probe. It
is going to take over the earth. Captain Omega reports to Think-
Tank that they have arrived at the earth. They find two thousand
books. They have not seen books. So they wonder what they are.
Think -Tank says they are 'sandwiches. Think-Tank asks them to
eat and report about them. Then Noodle says that he has received
a data in his mind. He calls the books as communicatino devices.
They say that the books may be eye communication. Then they
hear the Mistress Mary' nursery rhyme. Think Tank infers that the
earthling grow metals like silver etc. They also grow explosives. So
the books may be explosivs also.

Q.4. What meaning do Think-Tank and others take out of the
nurseаry rhyme 'Hey diddle..spoon' which is a code for him?
                                                                                            (V.Imp.)
Ans. Think-Tank order Martian space proble to halt taking
over the earth. Lt. Iota then reads the nursery rhyme starting with
"Hey diddle...spoon' from the book. Think-Tank thinks it is more
threatening. He says that the earth people have reached a high
level of civilisation. They have taught their domesticated animals
music culture and space techniques. Their dogs have a sense of
humour. They are launching an interplanetary attack of millions of
cows. He asks all to get ready for the danger. He commands the
invasion fleet not to attack the earth that day, he calls for the
transcription of the next code.

Q.5. What meaning does Think Tank take out of the nursery
rhyme 'Humpty Dumpty....again"? What for does he order and
why?
Ans. Sgt. Oop reads the nursery rhyme. It is the next code for
Think-Tank. Sgt. Ooop reads it. He show the picture of Humpty
Dumpty to Think-Tank. He tell shim that Humpty Dumpty looks like
him with a big ballon like head. This greatly terrifies Think-Tank. He
screams that the earth people are after him. This means that they
plan to capture Mars Central Control and Think-Tank. He calls it an
attack of Mars. He order Noodle to prepare a space capsule for him.
He must escape without delay. He also calls that the space people
must leave. Earth and their traces at once. The earth people must
not know that he knows about their attack.

Q.6. How, according to Historian, did one dusty old book
nursery rhyme save the world from a martian invasion?
Ans. The Martian space probe is actually the invasion fleet. It
is going to take over the Earth. Think Tank is the Commander-in-
Chief controlling everything. He gets into contact with Captain
Omega of the invasion fleet. He wants to know where they are Capt.
Omega talks with Think Tank about the books they have found on
the earth. He calls them 'sandwiches', 'communication devices',
'explosive' etc. the nursery rhymes are read by Sgt. Oop from the
old dusty book. They are treated by them as secret codes. Think-
Tank misinterprets their meanings. From the last rhyme 'Humpty
Dumpty' he understands that the earth people are after him. He
screams at oncce. He asks Noodle to prepare a space capsule for
him. He would go to Alpha Centuri Planet, millions of miles away.

Q.7. What, according to Historian, was done between Mars
and Earth after Think Tank ran away from Mars?
Ans. According to Historian one dusty old book of nursery
rhymes saved the world from a Martian invasion. It was all due to
the wrong meaning taken by the Commander-in-Chief Think-Tank.
He got so scared due to the wrong meaning that he fled Mars. In
the twenty-fifth century, the earth people resumed contacts with
Mars. Both the Martian and Earthling became very friendly with
each other. Think Tank's place was taken by wise Noodle. The
Earthlings taught the martians the difference between sandwiches
and books. They were also taught how to read. A model library was
also set up in the martian capital city of Marsopolis.
