Extract-1. The fiercely independent people of Coorg are
possibly of Greek or Arabic descent. As one story goes, a part of
Alexander's army moved south along the coast and settled here
when return became impractical. These people married amongst
the locals and their culture is apparent in the martial traditions,
marriage and religious rites, which are distinct from the Hindu
mainstream. The theory of Arab origin draws support from the
long, black coat with an embroidered waist belt worn by the
Kodavus. Know as kuppia, it resembles the kuffia worn by the
Arabs and the Kurds.

Extract-2. Coorgi homes have a tradition of hospitality,
and they are more than willing to recount numerous tales of valour
related to their sons and fathers. Coorg Regiment is one of the
most decorated in the Indian Army, and the first Chief of Indian
Army, General Cariappa, was a Coorgi. Even now, Kodavus are
the only people in Indian permitted to carry firearms without a
licence.
       The river Cauvery obtains its water from the hills and forests
of Coorg. Mahaseer-a large freshwater fish-abound in these water.
Kingfishers dive for their catch, while squirrels and langurs drop
partially eaten fruit for the mischief of enjoying the splash and the
ripple effect in the clear water. Elephants enjoy being bathed and
scrubbed in the river by their mahout.

Q. 1. Where is Coorg or Kodagu situated ? How does it
look ?
Ans. Coorg or Kodagu is situated midway between Mysore
and the coastal town of Mangalore. It is the smallest district of
Karnataka. It is a piece of heaven fallen from the Kingdom of God.
This is a land of rolling hills. It has evergreen rain forests, spices
and coffee plantations. During the monsoons, it rains much. Not
many visitors come then. The touring season is between September
and March. There is a the smell of coffee in the air. One can look
coffee estates and colonial bungalows here. They stand tucked
under tree covers in many good corners.

called Kodavus ?
Ans. The author calls the people of Coorg as the race of

Ans. Coorg is a place of great tourist interest. Several surprises
are hidden in Coorg. It is a place worth watching. We can find
fresh river water of Kavery where Mahaseer fish is found. In these
waters, elephants enjoy while taking bath. Several adventures are
available for visitors such as rafting, canoeing, mountain biking.
rock climbing etc. Macaques, langurs, squirrels, birds, bees etc.
are the part of Coorg's nature.
       Brahmagiri hills give a hill watch of Coorg whereas a rope
bridge takes us to 64-acre island, Nisargadhama. In Bylakuppe.
we have Tibetan settlement where monks move in red, yellow
and ochre coloured robes.
